Finding God’s voice in the sacred pause
Have you ever wondered why God invites us to rest so often?
Throughout Jesus’ life, He makes it known tha rest was an essential part of living with purpose. Yet in today’s do more, achieve more, keep going culture, rest can feel almost irresponsible.
As women, we are often masters at multitasking. We juggle work, family, ministry, relationships, appointments, responsibilities, and the needs of everyone around us. Somehow, adding “just one more thing” can leave us exhausted and overwhelmed while making us feel either productive or like failures.
But there is a difference between being busy and being fruitful.
God never created us to carry everything alone.
He is the One who sustains us, strengthens us, carries our burdens, and equips us for what He has actually called us to do.
Jesus Made Time to Withdraw
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” — Luke 5:16
Jesus had plenty to do.
Crowds wanted His attention. People needed healing. His disciples needed teaching. Everywhere He went, there were needs waiting for Him.
And yet, Jesus still withdrew.
He didn’t step away because His work was unimportant.
He stepped away because being with the Father was essential.
Jesus understood something our hurried culture often forgets:
You cannot continually pour out without returning to the Source.
Slowing down gave Him space for prayer, communion, direction, and renewal.
If Jesus intentionally made room for quiet, perhaps we need it more than we realize.
Can You Hear the Whisper?
Sometimes life becomes so loud that God’s voice seems difficult to hear.
Our phones are buzzing.
Our calendars are full.
Our minds are racing.
Someone always needs something.
And even when the room around us is quiet, the noise inside our minds may continue.
Elijah experienced something similar in 1 Kings 19:11–12.
God told Elijah to stand before Him. Then came a powerful wind.
But God wasn’t in the wind.
Then came an earthquake.
God wasn’t in the earthquake.
Then came a fire.
But God wasn’t in the fire.
And afterward came a gentle whisper.
What if God hasn’t stopped speaking?
What if our lives have simply become too noisy to recognize His whisper?
Rest Is an Act of Trust
Slowing down can sometimes feel like doing nothing.
But biblical rest isn’t inactivity.
It is intentional trust.
It is saying:
“Lord, You are my guide. Speak, for Your servant is listening.”
In 1 Samuel 3:10, Samuel responded to God:
“Speak, for your servant is listening.”
There is something powerful about becoming still enough to say those words.
Speak, Lord.
Not:
Let me finish everything first.
Not:
Let me solve this myself.
Not:
Let me squeeze You into the five minutes I have left.
But simply:
Speak. I’m listening.
When we intentionally stop, we remind our hearts of something very important:
God is still working even when we aren’t.
The world continues turning when we put down the phone.
God remains in control when we leave something unfinished until tomorrow.
His plans do not depend upon our ability to remain exhausted.
Sometimes stopping is one of the greatest demonstrations of faith we can make.
What If Doing Less Helps You Accomplish More?
We often assume productivity means accomplishing as many things as possible.
But perhaps godly productivity looks different.
Maybe the question isn’t:
“How much can I accomplish today?”
Maybe it’s:
“Lord, what are You asking me to accomplish today?”
There will always be another task.
Another notification.
Another opportunity.
Another request.
Another person needing something.
But not everything that demands your attention deserves your attention.
Sometimes we become exhausted because we’re carrying responsibilities God never assigned to us.
Create a Sacred Pause Today
You don’t have to completely rearrange your life.
Start small.
Turn your phone off for an hour.
Decline one non-essential commitment.
Sit quietly with your Bible before reaching for your to-do list.
Take ten minutes and simply pray.
Go outside without your phone.
Sit in silence.
Breathe.
And ask:
“Lord, what matters to You today?”
Then give yourself permission to listen.
You may discover that the answer isn’t to do more.
It may be to release something.
To wait.
To rest.
To pray.
To trust.
Because sometimes the greatest clarity comes when we stop trying so hard to create it ourselves.
A Gentle Reminder for Today
You do not have to accomplish everything today.
You don’t have to respond to every demand.
You don’t have to carry every burden.
You simply need to remain faithful to what God has placed in front of you.
There are seasons when moving forward is obedience.
And there are moments when stopping is obedience too.
Sometimes doing less allows us to hear more.
And when we hear God’s voice more clearly, we can move forward with greater peace, purpose, and confidence.
Reflection Questions
Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:
- What distractions are filling my mind today that it is preventing me from hearing God’s voice?
- What can I remove from my schedule to create more space for Him?
- Am I carrying something God never asked me to carry?
- Where might God be inviting me to rest instead of strive?
Prayer
Lord, teach me the true value of what it means to rest in You.
Help me slow down to hear Your whisper amidst all the business of life.
Give me the wisdom to see what truly deserves my attention, and the courage to release what doesn’t.
Help me make space for You by letting go of what doesn’t matter so I can embrace what it is You want me to do.
Speak clearly to me today–your servant is listening.
Quiet my thoughts and bring peace to my spirit as I surrender each step to You.
Help me remember that You are still working–even when I am resting.
Amen.
